The Verve - Ten Things You Need To Know About The Verve (But Only One Is True)
25 Aug 2008
By Christopher Hollow and Wes Holland
The Verve are back with a hot new album Forth. But just when you thought you knew everything you needed to know about the band here's ten brand new facts (but only one is true).
1) Due to a printing error the first 300,000 copies of the new album bear the title
Fourth. These have already become collector's items, one selling on eBay for $430 dollars.
2) Singer Richard Ashcroft was a child actor and starred in the second season of the UK's much beloved TV series
Grange Hill. Ashcroft played a bookworm called Hooper.
3) The Verve's 1997 hit 'The Drugs Don't Work' is a cover of a song originally written, recorded and produced by US hip hopper Jay-Z.
4) Bassist Simon Jones is the biological son of Led Zeppelin bassist, John Paul Jones. His mother, Gloria, sang the original version of "Tainted Love".
5) On the deluxe edition of
Forth is a track called "Muhammad Ali". The real Muhammad Ali played percussion on the track. He is credited as "The Greatest".
6) Guitarist Nick McCabe's grandfather, Hamish 'Jock' McCabe, invented the Scottish sweet treat shortbread.
7) Guns N' Roses'
The Spaghetti Incident is still a poor album. Just ask Verve drummer Peter Salisbury.
8) In 2003 US high school student Wesley Johnson was caught cheating on his English exam after plagiarizing The Verve's "Lucky Man". Johnson was graded C+ and chided by his teacher for the stanza: "I'm stood here naked/You're smiling/I feel no disgrace."
9) Ex-guitarist Simon Tong left the band to pursue his obsession for "Gongoozling". Similar to Trainspotters, Gongoozlers enjoy watching idle activity on the canals of the UK.
Minder actor Denis Waterman auditioned to replace him.
10) The Verve appeared in a cameo on the Australian soap opera
Neighbours, Episode 4801 -
"Brothers Grim" - warning Dr. Karl to distance himself from Janae.
